Winter Hair Therapy

kerastase01kerastase06 kerastase08I love to experiment with my hair! Growing up, I had stacks of magazines filled with inspirational ideas to try various colors and styles for my hair. Some ideas were amazing, and some I would love to forget. I remember looking at myself in the mirror numerous times saying – ‘What were you thinking Sophie?!?’ (insert face palm when I got bangs). There were the odd few styles I fell head over heels in love with it that I couldn’t imagine my hair any other way (raising my hands in praise when I got the Aniston hair cut).kerastase02When it comes to colouring my hair, I have played around with various methods and styles. I have colored my hair straight black, to experimenting with highlights and streaks, but my favorite and long love is ombre. If you have been following me on Instagram, you will notice I have had a light brown balayage ombre for over one and half years. I recently changed it and went for a medium brown sombre. Yes you read it right, sombre – it’s basically like your traditional ombre but just a little more subtle.

When I was young, my hair was in the best of shape. It was strong, healthy and it felt silky to the touch. I would use whatever shampoo my parents bought and it was perfectly fine. Fast forward a few years later and my hair was starting to show signs of all the treatments I have been putting it through. It ‘looked’ strong and healthy but texture wise, it needed serious help and the drugstore products were not helping. I knew I had to step up and start investing in products that could fix my hair problems.kerastase03When it comes to my skin, I am extremely diligent on what products I use. I knew I had to do the same with my hair. Plus I noticed, like my skin, my hair goes through various changes depending on the environment, weather, and various stress factors it encounters.

If you are a frequent visitor to my blog, you know I have been using Kerastase since 2005! It is the only brand I use for my hair. Recently I was invited by the wonderful folks of Kerastase to try out their new FusioDose line and paired up with their hair expert, Tim Corbett, to help my hair get its’ A game on.

I also want to thank Kerastase for letting me pick Tim’s brain on answering some questions that some of you (okay it’s me) have when it comes to hair care.

1. What is the most common mistake people make about their hair? How can they fix this?

The most common mistake people make is skipping heat protection for their hair. If you are drying hair with a blow dryer, or using a hot tool, you are drawing vital moisture out of the fiber. This can be remedied using a a combination of Elixir Ultime and a thermal treatment such as Keratin Thermique or Nectar Thermique to coat and seal in protection.

2. What is something you see common happen to hair during the winter time? What is the cause and what do you recommend to help out.

If our clients are headed south to sunnier climates, the sun, surf and sand are going to take their own toll on their hair. If you are talking day-to-day elemental effects of winter, the major culprit is dryness.  One of the best recommendations I can make is to minimize the frequency of the shampooing to blow drying ritual. Nothing like a good weekly masque for moisture! The Kérastase Masquintense comes to mind as a wise choice.

3. I color my hair every three to four months (this does not include going for gloss), What shampoo and condition can I use to help maintain the longevity of my colour and shine (so I don’t have to go back to the salon frequently).

Chroma Captive from Kerastase is a must have, from the shampoo to conditioner to a weekly masque treatment to add to your at home ritual. I also recommend keeping the shampooing to only once to twice a week if you want optimum retention of your colour.

4. Is there any product to help freshen your hair at the end of the day? I find at the end of the day my hair tends to be flat, anything to help revive it and look like I just walked out of a salon?

A dry shampoo such as Kerastase Powder Bluff, is an excellent way to refresh and revitalize your look as the day wears on. If that is not enough and you are going from the office to dinner, Kerastase VIP (Volume In Powder) spray with give you almost surreal volume with little effort and maximum effect.

5. I straighten my hair everyday, is there anything I can use to help prevent my hair from damage and my ends from splitting?

Honestly? No. If you are straightening your hair everyday, the only thing you can do is put a barrier in your hair to protect it from the heat of the iron. If your hair is unruly a good start would be to apply Kérastase Spray Fluidissime to the lengths and ends, along with Kérastase Keratine Thermique to both protect from heat and render the hair smooth. This will help cut down the time spent with the iron.

6. How frequent should anyone go for a fusio dose? Who needs it and why it is important? Can you do this at home?

I think the frequency of a Kérastase Fusio-Dose treatment is dependant on the needs of the guest. If they receive regular colour treatments, or spend a lot of time drying, then it can be done with relative frequency.  I recommend it following any colour work and twice monthly for good maintenance. It is a major game changer in that hair is instantly moisturized, repaired, densified depending on the treatment of choice. Kérastase Fusio-Dose is and always will be an in salon treatment due to the vary nature of custom tailoring the treatm

7. With the holidays coming around the corner, everyone is going to be getting updo’s for christmas parties. Any recommendations on what is a great way to achieve voluminous hair without frizz?

Start with detail put in the prep and styling of the hair. This includes setting with an iron. As always, we want to start with heat protection with Kérastase Elixir Ultime and a Thermique product. Build body into the hair at the roots with Kérastase Lift Vertige and  Forme Fatale on the lengths and ends. If the hair you are working on is fine to the touch, a volumizer like Kérastase Volumifique would be fabulous sprayed throughout. Keep a teezing brush on hand and only back brush the roots, never the lengths.

8. What is Kerastase best selling product? What is your favourite?

At my salon,  Kerastase Bain Chroma Captive is the best selling product.  My personal favourite is Mousse Bouffante. I love the body and volume is creates with minimal effort. I’m all about minimal effort, maximum reward.

9. Is there a limit of how many hair products you can use at one time?

That limit is really dependant on how much hair you have, and how much you like to spend in time and money. A perfect day could look like this- Shampoo, conditioner followed by a masque (other grooming being undertaken whilst the masque is doing it’s thing. Elixir Ultime, followed by a Thermique, a mousse, a finishing oil Chonologist, for example, finishing with a hairspray and glossing spray. Is that too much? I counted 8. I could do it all with Kerastase as my hair care and styling tool, and it would not be too much.

10. Most hair products (serums/shampoos) target one type of hair, how is it that fusio dose helps target two?

First off, Fusio-Dose is neither a serum nor a shampoo. It is a treatment like no other. It targets both primary needs of the individual and the secondary needs. The primary needs could be strength or moisture, where secondary needs could be manageability or shine. The precise diagnosis will result in the optimum choice of treatment chosen for that specific guest yielding a perfect result.kerastase04

This was very helpful! I definitely don’t take care of my care as frequently as this post suggests I should. I colour my hair an average of every 4-9 months. No conditioner. No heat protection. But I also don’t curl my hair very often (maybe once or twice a week) and I let it air dry.

I would say I’ve been blessed with hair that has taken to colouring well but I know I might be taking it for granted and someday it might die on me.
